How to prevent limited users from using removable disks in Vista

This trick allows you to deny access to removable media and protect your PC against unauthorized software installations and prevent data leaks through removable media such as DVD, USB drives. This trick does not require any additional software to be installed , you can use the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) , a component of Windows 2000 and later Windows NT-based operating systems that provides system administrators and advanced users with a flexible interface through which they may configure and monitor the system.
Here we go,
1. Start ->type ‘mmc’ in search form and press enter.
2. Click File ->Add/Remove Snap-in
3. Double click ‘Group policy Object Editor’ and click ‘Finish’ and then ‘Ok’
4. Now repeat this step. i.e., FIle ->Add/Remove Snap-in –> Group Policy Editor
5. Click ‘Browse’ instead of ‘Finish’ button.
6. Click on ‘Users’ tab.
7. Select the limited user account that needs to be restricted and click ok.
8 . Click ‘Finish’ and then ok.
9. Now double click Local Computer\{User} Policy –> User Configuration –> Administrative templates –> System.
10. Select ‘Removable Storage Access’ and in ‘Settings’ , double click
- ‘ CD and DVD: Deny read access ‘ and select ‘ Enabled ‘
- ‘ Removable Disks: Deny read access ‘ and select ‘ Enabled’
Note : You can give read only access by selecting ‘CD and DVD:Deny write access option’.
11. Click File->Save as and give a name for example “User restrictions”.
